Description
Can Melbourne meet the challenges of climate change and rising petrol prices with strong and sustained public transport growth? The expiry of the Connex and Yarra Trams franchises at the end of 2008 provide an opportunity to rethink the approach to public transport in Melbourne. At the heart of the decisions about the future of the Connex and Yarra Trams franchises are vital questions about the public transport management in Melbourne:
- Is the ‘20% by 2020’ public transport mode share target really just an aspiration?
- Must we wait 10 years for even the most modest rail extensions?
- Why do our buses and trains still not connect?
The speakers, including world leader in public transport planning, Dr Gustav Nielsen, discussed and debated the choices facing Melbourne.
This event was presented by the
Australasian Centre for the Governance and Management of Urban Transport (GAMUT) in association with Future Melbourne and Victorian Local Government Association.
