A facilitated Backcasting Workshop with Melbourne’s leading urban development and transport thinkers and professionals on the preferred future of Melbourne’s urban form and transport and how this vision can be achieved.

Where will we live when petrol is too expensive for average income earners to buy? Will the alternative fuels mean business as usual?
Will we just have to travel less? More working from home? Will we all be living in dense suburbs or apartments and relying on our feet, pedals and telecommuting to connect us?
Will our future grandchildren laugh at the absurdity of us having once owned a car?

This backcasting workshop has been made into a short film called My Grandma Owned a Car and shown publicly at the big screen at Federation Square throughout September 2007 . The short film will be made available on this website and the University of Melbourne’s website from 1 September 2007.

A summary of the outcomes from the backcasting workshop will also be published on this website from 1 September 2005 for general debate and discussion.
