Bicycle Lanes in Helsinki
This document demonstrates how Helsinki got it right with regard to setting up bicycle lanes. Helsinki is in many ways similar to Melbourne which is why it is a great city to use as an example for borrowing ideas from.
Figure 1: traffic flow in Helsinki.
As demonstrated by the traffic layout in Figure 1, Helsinki people understand that placing bicycles between moving cars and opening car doors is not an appropriate solution.
Figure 2: A real life example of figure 1.

Figure 5: No need for proper locks.
This was the standard locking system for bicycles in Helsinki. The back wheel when locked will not roll, however the bicycle is not chained to anything. This appeared to be enough as it was how everyone locked their bikes, which shows an admirable level of honesty amongst the people.
