A new generation of young people are invited to help create the future of Melbourne

29 Apr 2008

Young people with an interest in creating a vibrant and sustainable Melbourne are being sought to help shape the City of Melbourne's Future Melbourne plan for 2020 by participating in a two day workshop titled Futurelab.

Futurelab will take place on 17-18 May at Digital Harbour, Docklands, hosted by the City of Melbourne and Future Canvas.

Forty of the 80 participants required for the Futurelab workshop are still to be selected. Organisers are seeking enthusiastic young people who reflect the city's diverse community, creativity and who have an active interest in Melbourne's future.

Interested participants are asked to apply online at www.futuremelbourne.com.au/futurelab by 5pm, Thursday 8 May 2008.

The City of Melbourne Lord Mayor, John So, said he was inspired by the enthusiasm of young Melbournians who were keen to participate in shaping the future of the city.

“We encourage interested participants to sign up and be a part of the Futurelab workshop. The City of Melbourne is a youthful city and values the feedback of young people on the draft Future Melbourne plan,” said the Lord Mayor.

Councillor Catherine Ng, Chair of the Planning Committee, said she was pleased to see the youth of Melbourne so keen to offer their ideas on how they want the city to progress into the future.

“We look forward to receiving feedback on the draft strategies by young people who live, work, play and study in the city,” said Cr Ng.

Future Canvas’, Emily B-Brodie, said Futurelab was an event where young people can express how they think and feel about the future of the city.

“Futurelab aims to develop new ideas for projects so our demographic can contribute to Melbourne and how we hope it can be in the future," Ms B-Brodie said.

In a range of bold and creative ways, Futurelab will challenge those involved to visualise the type of city they want to live in. Over the course of the workshop participants will explore the city as a canvas for sustainability projects, and create ideas for community-based initiatives. It is also an opportunity for attendees to meet other like-minded people. Participants will work together in teams to visualise proposed options for the future of Melbourne and plan how these ideas can be acted on innovatively.

Futurelab forms part of the City of Melbourne’s public consultation process for Future Melbourne – a 10 year strategic plan for the city drafted in consultation with the public, businesses and community stakeholders.
