The Future Melbourne Program

A progressing public conversation

The Future Melbourne program is being conducted in five phases, based around the concept of a progressing public conversation.

During every phase, the City of Melbourne will be inviting the Melbourne community to participate in various ways.

Phase 1 | Identifying the issues, revealing the values:
June to September 2007
Phase 2 | Considering the options:
October 2007 to January 2008
Phase 3 | Evaluating the choices:
January to February 2008
Phase 4 | Negotiating the results:
March to June 2008
Phase 5 | Achieving agreement:
July to September 2008

Current phase

Phase 4 | Negotiating the results:
March to June 2008

In this phase, the City of Melbourne will develop a draft Future Melbourne 10 Year Plan that reflects the collaborative spirit of this project, including partnership projects and actions to be shared or managed alone.

The draft plan will be available for comment via a ‘Wiki’ online collaborative document (similar to Wikipedia) and as a printable document.

Previous phases

Phase 1 | Identifying the issues, revealing the values
June to September 2007

The first phase was the conversation starter. Together, the Melbourne community explored the issues and values informed, guided and influenced our thinking around the future of Melbourne.

The City of Melbourne’s Future Melbourne team worked closely with Melbourne's leading cultural, social, economic, business and environmental organisations in identifying the most significant issues for the city and the community’s strongest-held values will become clearer.

Phase 2 | Considering the options
October 2007 to January 2008

Using the issues and values identified in Phase One as a starting point, during Phase Two: Considering the options, we identified a series of possible options for Melbourne's future.

These have now been developed into a series of possible futures and opportunities.

Phase
3 | Evaluating the choices
January to February 2008

All research collected so far has been transformed into the ‘Future Melbourne: considering the options’ document - a series of possible futures for the city. You are invited to share your views on these options.

Through your comments, and those of the rest of the Melbourne community, we can collectively refine and develop the options into real opportunities and possibilities for the future of the city.
