Almost 150 participants attended this forum. The panel examined the uncertain impact on Melbourne of current global trends, including peak oil, climate change and global warming, and what this will mean for Melbourne. Will rising sea levels impact on the city? How will a hotter climate change our way of life? Will car dependence change? How will we manage energy and water constraints?

Professor Peter Newman, Director, Institute for Sustainability and Technology Policy, Murdoch University
Peter’s career at Murdoch University stretches back to 1974 and includes developing, in conjunction with Jeff Kenworthy, the Millennium Cities Database that measures and compares the transport systems of over 100 cities worldwide. Peter has worked with the Premiers of Western Australia and New South Wales to incorporate sustainability into government planning. He is well known in Perth for his work in rebuilding Perth’s rail system.
George Pappas, Chair Committee for Melbourne, Vice Chairman BioMelbourne Network
George is the Vice Chairman of the BioMelbourne Network and was appointed Chairman of the Committee for Melbourne in May 2005. George is a Senior Advisor of The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) having retired as a Senior Vice President in June 2002. George was recently engaged on a part-time assignment as Under Secretary in the Department of Premier and Cabinet for the State of Victoria, leading a project to develop the State’s future economic strategy.
Graham Tupper, National Liaison Officer, Australian Conservation Foundation
Graham joined ACF in 2005 after serving 15 years in the international aid and development field. He promotes ACF's national policies for a sustainable Australia covering climate change, water and healthy rivers, sustainable cities, and measures to protect our great natural areas including forests and marine parks.
Dr Jago Dodson, Research Fellow, Griffith University
Jago's work has sought to provide critical accounts of the links between housing systems, transport and urban planning. His most recent research has investigated the exposure of Australian cities to petroleum energy shocks and the distribution of socio-economic vulnerability to fuel price increases and broader economic impacts. Jago is currently working on improving methods for assessing transport disadvantage in Australian cities.
